The Waterer Watered

In the charming French countryside, 18-year-old Jacques had always dreamt of working in the bustling city of Paris. The bright lights, the rush of the crowds, and the promise of a bright future had fuelled his aspirations for years. So, when a job opportunity as a gardener arose at the sprawling gardens of a wealthy aristocrat in the heart of Paris, Jacques jumped at the chance.

On his first day, Jacques was tasked with watering the flowerbeds at the entrance of the garden. He eagerly picked up the watering can and began his work. As he went about his duties, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement in being in the big city and taking care of such a beautiful garden.

However, as he approached one particular flowerbed, Jacques noticed something peculiar. A mischievous young boy had stepped in and was purposely smashing his feet onto the flowers. Without a second thought, Jacques ran over to the boy and scolded him for his careless actions.

The boy, startled by Jacques’ sudden appearance, immediately fled the scene. Jacques, feeling proud of himself for protecting the garden, got back to his duties. However, unknown to him, the boy had left a toy in the flowerbed – a toy that Jacques would unknowingly step on and stumble to the ground, making a fool of himself in front of the aristocrat and his friends.

Feeling embarrassed and foolish, Jacques slunk away from the garden and back to his lodgings. Overwhelmed by shame and disappointment, he began questioning his abilities as a gardener and whether he was cut out for city life after all. As he lay in bed, he couldn’t shake off the feeling of failure and disappointment.

Days turned into weeks, but Jacques could not get over his humiliation. He couldn’t bring himself to show up for work and eventually lost his job. As the days passed, Jacques found himself wandering aimlessly around the city, feeling lost and directionless.

One day, while sitting on a park bench, Jacques saw the same mischievous boy again. Only this time, the boy was with his mother. As Jacques watched from afar, he saw the boy taking pictures of flowers with his mother’s camera. It was then that Jacques realized that the boy wasn’t trying to destroy the flowers after all, but rather had simply been curious about them.

Feeling guilty for his earlier outburst, Jacques approached the mother and son and apologized for his behaviour. The mother, gracious and understanding, forgave him easily, and the two struck up a conversation about the beauty of the flowers in the park.

As they spoke, Jacques learned that the mother was an art collector and was always on the lookout for new inspirations for her collection. Sensing an opportunity to redeem himself, Jacques offered to take her to the aristocrat’s garden and show her some of the most beautiful flowers in Paris. The mother, intrigued by his offer, accepted.

Together, Jacques and the mother went to the garden, and he showed her around, explaining the different species and their unique qualities. As they walked, Jacques felt his love for gardening reigniting, and he felt more inspired than he had in weeks.

At the end of the day, the mother thanked Jacques for his tour and gave him her card, saying that she would love to keep in touch and see more of his work. Jacques, feeling grateful and newfound confidence, accepted her offer.

Over the next few weeks, Jacques began working on a garden of his own, pouring all his love and creativity into it. He felt more alive than he had in a long time and found that his passion had been reignited. Soon after, he received a call from the art collector, who offered him a job as her personal gardener. Jacques accepted and lived the rest of his life, tending to many beautiful gardens all over Paris.

In the end, Jacques realized that sometimes it didn’t take an act of heroism to be successful in life. All it took was forgiveness, a kind heart, and a passion for something you truly love.
