As the sun set over the dusty plains of the Old West, a caravan of covered wagons slowly made its way along the winding path. The travelers, mostly families seeking a better life in California, had been on the trail for months, enduring harsh weather conditions and constant peril from Indians and bandits alike. But they were nearly there, and the prospect of a new beginning filled their hearts with hope and determination.
Little did they know, however, that they were being watched. High up on a hill overlooking the road, a sinister figure was cackling with glee, plotting his next move. This figure was the Devil himself, and he had come down from his perch in Hell to torment the mortal world with his dark magic.
The Devil had a particular interest in this caravan, for he knew that among the passengers was a young girl named Mary, whom he had seen in a vision. Mary had a special gift, a power to see through illusions and discern the true nature of things. This gift had caught the Devil’s attention, and he had decided to make her his own.
As the wagons trudged on, the Devil began to plot his tricks. He conjured up illusions of treasure and water, making the travelers believe that they were close to their destination. But in reality, they were still far away, and their supplies were running low.
Mary, however, saw through the Devil’s deceptions. She knew that something was wrong, and she began to investigate. One night, while everyone was sleeping, she snuck out of her wagon and made her way up the hill where the Devil was hiding. With her special gift, she could see through his disguise and reveal his true form – a grotesque demon with horns and a forked tail.
The Devil was surprised to see Mary standing before him, and he realized that he had underestimated her. But he wasn’t giving up that easily. He offered her a deal – if she would join forces with him, he would give her all the riches of the world and make her immortal. Mary was tempted, but she knew that the Devil couldn’t be trusted. She refused his offer and ran back to the caravan, warning the others about what was happening.
The travelers were frightened, but they knew that they had to face the Devil if they were ever going to reach their destination. They gathered their courage and set off towards the hill where the Devil was hiding. As they drew near, the Devil unleashed his full power, creating illusions and monsters to scare them off. But the travelers didn’t give up, and with Mary’s help, they were able to defeat the Devil and send him back to Hell.
With the Devil gone, the caravan continued on its path, finally reaching California and starting anew. Mary became a hero among the travelers, and they honored her by baptizing a stream in her name. But she knew that the Devil would never give up, and that she would always have to be ready to fight him. She promised herself that she would use her gift to help others and protect them from the Devil’s tricks.
And so, the travelers went on with their lives, and Mary became a mythic figure, a guardian angel watching over the Old West. She would always be remembered as the one who saw through the Devil’s 400 tricks.
